Case Study: Baillie/Marsman Missing Person & Homicide Investigation
On July 11, 2016, the Calgary Police Service (CPS) started a missing persons investigation for 34-year-old Sara BAILLIE and her five-year-old daughter Taliyah MARSMAN. Baillie’s family had contacted police to report her and her daughter missing under odd circumstances. During a secondary search of Baillie’s residence, her body was found buried underneath clothing in a bedroom. The file transitioned into an exigent circumstance kidnapped child/murder investigation.
Homicide Analyst Trish Pace and Det. Scott Guterson from the Calgary Police Service join us on this webinar to give insight into this large-scale exigent investigation that started with a missing person report, transitioned to murder and missing child file, then to a double murder, and finally a prolonged pre-trial investigation ending in a conviction.
This presentation highlights the importance of an embedded analyst from the onset of an investigation and the effect it had on:
• Identifying suspects
• Eliminating suspects
• The Domino Effect of rapid analysis/dissemination information and how it was vital to this case
• Locating additional evidence and recovering human remains
The presentation will also focus on the importance of an embedded analyst post-charging and the work required to eliminate third-party suspects:
• Approximately 40 additional people were investigated and background, and ultimately excluded as suspects
• Preparation for court testimony and cross-examination
