WEBINAR: Understanding Coordinate Systems and the Basics of GIS
Understanding Coordinate Systems and the Basics of GIS April 14, 2021 | 12:00-1:00 PM Eastern Time
Mapping crime locations when analyzing a case is not as simple as just putting dots on the map. Understanding coordinate systems and the basics of geographic information systems (GIS) are critical for furthering your investigation, deriving meaning from events, and helping verify raw data in your mapping software.
On April 14th, we are joined by guest presenter Lorie Velarde, GIS Analyst with the Irvine Police Department in California, for an introductory webinar on the basics of GIS.
In this presentation, Lorie will cover:
• Data needed for mapping
• Location data from providers
• Coordinate systems
• Cell phone ping data
• Measurement data
Lorie Velarde is a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analyst with the Irvine Police Department’s Crime Analysis Unit. She holds a Master of Science degree in Criminology, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Ecology, a California State Teaching Credential, and a California Department of Justice Certification in Crime and Intelligence Analysis. Lorie has 35 years of law enforcement experience including 23 years of crime analysis experience at two law enforcement agencies.
Lorie has developed and taught training courses on the topics of crime mapping, geographic profiling, analyzing crimes spatially, conducting cell phone analyses, and automating analytical products. She has published book chapters and news articles on the topics of crime analysis and crime mapping, and she has been featured on HLN’s original series “Unmasking a Killer”. Lorie has received several awards for her work including the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Award for Criminal Investigative Excellence, the Southern California Crime and Intelligence Analyst Association’s Analyst of the Year Award, and the Alpha Group Award for Creativity and Excellence in Crime Analysis.
